Notes on Noun Phrase Structure in Tagalog
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents some observations on the syntax and semantics of the Tagalog phrase marking particles ang, ng, and sa. More specifically, it is concerned with investigating the following two points. First, while there is some evidence for the widely held view that the phase marking particles form a kind of paradigm in that they are at least in partial complementary distribution, they differ significantly in their distributional characteristics. These differences reflect the fact that historically speaking, the phrase marking particles develop from two quite different sources, i.e. determiners and prepositions. Synchronically, they clearly interact in a way that makes it difficult to analyze them unequivocally as either determiners or prepositions. Still, the different distributional characteristics make it doubtful whether it is actually warranted to assign them the same structural position within NP/DP.

Phonological conditions on variable adjective-noun word order in Tagalog
Tagalog adjectives and nouns variably occur in two word orders, separated by an intermediary linker: adjective-linker-noun versus noun-linker-adjective. The linker has two phonologicallyconditioned surface forms (–ng and na). This paper presents a large-scale, web-based corpus study of adjective/noun order variation in Tagalog, focusing in particular on phonological conditions. Results show tha...
متن کاملInvestigating Embedded Question Reuse in Question Answering
The investigation presented in this paper is a novel method in question answering (QA) that enables a QA system to gain performance through reuse of information in the answer to one question to answer another related question. Our analysis shows that a pair of question in a general open domain QA can have embedding relation through their mentions of noun phrase expressions. We present methods f...
متن کاملDo Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?
Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...
متن کاملOn the Origin of Philippine Vowel Grades
The concept of vowel grade by which morphological features in some IndoEuropean languages are signaled by change in the quality of the vowel of a given form has long been recognized. More recently, the term has also been applied to the variation in vowels that occur in some case-marking prepositional forms in Austronesian languages. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate some of the proces...
متن کاملNouns and Verbs in Tagalog: a reply to Foley
There is an old saying to the effect that “any English noun can be verbed.” In Tagalog too it appears that any noun can be verbed; and moreover, that any verb can be nouned. If this is true, can we really maintain a distinction between these two categories in Tagalog? As Foley (1998) points out, this question has been a matter of serious debate for almost 100 years, and opinion among specialist...
